Everyone Thinks They Have This…

When patients mention having “soft teeth,” it often leads to misunderstandings about dental health. While teeth are made of enamel—a very hard structure—some people equate frequent cavities or tooth sensitivity with having "soft" teeth. Conditions like amelogenesis imperfecta can result in thinner or poorly formed enamel, making teeth more prone to decay. However, most of the time, "soft teeth" refers to weakened enamel due to factors like diet, medications, or acid exposure, not a literal softness. Understanding this terminology can shift the focus to the real causes of tooth decay, empowering people to maintain better oral health through proper care and regular dental visits. Please note that I am NOT dismissing the fact that conditions like enamel hypoplasia, acid reflux, bruxism, or frequent vomiting can weaken enamel; I’m simply saying that a personalized approach from dental professionals can help manage these risks, whether or not you have enamel defects.
