How Often Should You Visit The Dentist?

Years ago a trip to the dentist was a seldom occurrence and most dentists worked on repairing problems with peoples teeth rather than preventing them. There were no guidelines for how often one should visit the dentist and information on proper oral care was also hard to come by. Today however, health organisations have made a strong effort to educate the public about oral health and how important it is to keep on top of your dental care. It is strongly recommended that you visit the dentist at least twice a year for checkups and cleaning and this has remained an accepted standard for a while now.

Even if you take good care of your teeth and gums you still need to visit regularly. Your dentist checks for early signs of problems that can later be devastating if not dealt with properly. Things like cavities, gum disease and oral cancer cannot always be seen or felt immediately until they are at an advanced stage. That is why it is important to frequently receive check-ups to maintain oral health so problems can be treated at a manageable stage. Visiting the dentist twice a year works well for most people and some people can manage less frequent visits because they have less risk of cavities or gum disease. However there are certain groups of high risk people who need to ensure they have regular attention to avoid problems. These groups include those who smoke cigarettes, diabetics, and people with current gum disease, people with weak immune response to bacterial infection and people who tend to get cavities or build ups of plaque.

During your lifetime you might find you need to visit the dentist more regularly due to stress or illness and other times less so because you may be more resilient to cavities or gum disease, your dentist will advise on the best schedule for visits. To ensure that you keep good oral health it is vitally important to take care of a few oral basics. Brushing at least twice a day and especially before sleeping is imperative. Having a routine three minutes of brushing ensures your teeth are thoroughly cleaned. Choosing a toothbrush with soft round bristles will avoid injuring you gums and wearing down the hard layer of your teeth. You should also change your tooth brush every three months because worn out bristles can also injure your gums. Flossing is an excellent way to remove hard to reach places that catch food and mouth wash also help prevent cavities and plaque build-up.

We've combined top-shelf dental CE with our love for Harley-Davidson motorcycle touring. By day, we explore some of the world's most breathtaking scenery. Evenings, we gather with our profession's foremost authorities. Come ride with us this year on the "Miles for Life" benefit ride. Yellowstone National Park was our first National Park. It remains the most visited National Park in the U.S. This ride takes in not only Yellowstone, but also Grand Teton National Park and are you ready? Jackson, Wyoming, a true cowboy tour of the west. Your ride includes: Cody, Wyoming, and the Buffalo Bill Wild West Historical Museum; Beartooth Pass, where you ride your Harley at 12,000 feet above sea level; Chief Joseph's Trail where the history of Custer's Last Stand was written; and the huge population of wild west wild life that abounds in this part of our great country. Add to this the unique geysers and formations that Yellowstone is famous for and you have a Harley ride memory that will last a lifetime. Wrap our continuing education experience around all of that and why would you ever even try to resist coming?

All proceeds from the "Miles for Life" ride will be donated to the 2012 Smiles for Life campaign.

When Fillings Aren't Enough. . . Crowns Are A Great Choice

Crowns cover and strengthen broken or decayed teeth. Crowns look natural and give you a healthy smile. When the size of a filling exceeds a certain proportion of the tooth, it must be replaced with a cap also called a crown. Porcelain crowns look very natural and don’t have a dark metal line. They reflect light with a natural healthy glow. Porcelain crowns can make even the ugliest teeth look like a movie star smile!

CA Coastal Cleanup

Here's some information about a cause that we support at Regency Dental Group. The information below is from the State of California website at this link:

WHAT IS COASTAL CLEANUP DAY? California Coastal Cleanup Day, an annual beach and inland waterway cleanup, is the state's largest volunteer event. In 2010, over 82,500 volunteers removed more than 1.2 million pounds of trash and recyclables from our beaches, lakes, and waterways. When combined with the International Coastal Cleanup, organized by Ocean Conservancy and taking place on the same day, California Coastal Cleanup Day becomes part of one of the largest volunteer events in the world.

WHY ARE BEACH CLEANUPS IMPORTANT? California's coast and waterways have historically been collecting spots for annual accumulations of trash and debris. This debris, if not removed, can be harmful and even fatal to all manners of marine wildlife, can damage our state's economy, and can even become a human health hazard. Coastal Cleanup Day is a great way for families, students, service groups, and neighbors to join together, take care of our fragile marine environment, show community support for our shared natural resources, learn about the impacts of marine debris and how we can prevent them, and to have fun!

HOW DO I PARTICIPATE? Participating in Coastal Cleanup Day is as easy as 1, 2, 3! For tips for teachers participating with their classes, see our Educator's Guide.
The Coastal Commission is committed to eliminating the waste created at Coastal Cleanup Day. Please join our efforts by bringing your own reusable supplies to the Cleanup. Learn more on our BYO page.
Be part of the solution to marine pollution! Join us on Saturday, September 17, 2011, from 9 a.m. to Noon for the 27th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day. Click here to learn more.

Debuting on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, the video features 21 notable Boys & Girls Club alumni including national co-spokespersons Denzel Washington and Jennifer Lopez, along with Ashanti, General Wesley Clark, Misty Copeland, John Paul DeJoria, Cuba Gooding Jr., Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Sugar Ray Leonard, Mario Lopez, Ne-Yo, Edward James Olmos, Lucille O'Neal, Shaquille O'Neal, Smokey Robinson, CC Sabathia, Martin Sheen, Courtney B. Vance, Kerry Washington and Shaun White. BGCA's 2010 National Youth of the Year Mona Dixon rounded out the cast. The music heard in the announcement features Beyonce and was written by Diane Warren.

The PSA, titled "Great Futures Start Here," was created to draw awareness about the critical issues -- high school dropout rate, childhood obesity, youth violence -- that puts millions of America's kids, and the nation's future, at risk.

Kids in every community deserve a chance at a great future. Boys & Girls Clubs provide high-impact, affordable programs, and caring adult mentorship to give kids an opportunity to learn and grow. Every day, Clubs around the world emphasize academic success, good character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles.
